Transaction involving a vehicle
When should I apply for a vehicle identification form?
The Vehicle Identification Form (FIV) is used to carry out certain administrative procedures when the vehicle does not have a registration document (carte grise):
- to take the roadworthiness test, in particular when requesting a duplicate in the event of loss or theft
- for the export of a damaged used vehicle whose registration document has been withdrawn
- for the sale of the vehicle at auction or by the estates department
This is a document issued by the Ministry of the Interior which lists the vehicle's technical specifications. It does not authorise the vehicle to be driven.
How do I get it?

The vehicle registration system records all the information necessary for vehicles to drive or affecting their availability.
When a vehicle is subject to an immobilisation order or an objection to the transfer of the vehicle registration document, it cannot be sold until the administrative status of the vehicle has been normalised and updated in the system.
In most cases, the administrative status is updated directly by the competent authority (e.g. law enforcement, bailiffs, tax authorities). However, the owner of the vehicle may request a correction in certain situations (e.g. false number plates, transfer not taken into account before monitoring was recorded, normalisation carried out before imminent sale).

If the vehicle is being used for a particular purpose (e.g. vintage, agricultural, military), this may be indicated on the registration certificate, on presentation of proof of such use.
In most cases, this indication must be requested when the vehicle is acquired, at the same time as the application for registration is made, either electronically with the Ministry of the Interior, or through an authorised automobile professional.
Once it is no longer being used for that purpose, the indication on the vehicle registration certificate is removed.
Note: The procedure below is the one for adding a purpose or indication, if you already own your vehicle.
If you wish to add a user or an indication when purchasing a vehicle, you must use the "Buying or receiving a used vehicle" online process.
