Sale/Donation
Before selling or donating your vehicle, you will need the following documents:
- Vehicle transfer certificate – CERFA 15776*01 To be completed with the future owner
- Vehicle lien release (e.g. certificate of non-pledge)
- Proof of roadworthiness less than six months old
Within 15 days of selling (or donating) your vehicle
Use the online procedure "Sell or donate my vehicle” and give the new owner the transfer code that appears at the end.
In addition to this transfer code, you will need to give the new owner the vehicle's full registration document, which you must cross out and on which you must write "Sold on (day/month/year/time) or Transferred on (day/month/year/time)" and your signature.
Special cases

The transfer code is a series of numbers and letters given at the end of the "Sell or donate my vehicle" process. It is valid for 15 days and must be given to the buyer.
How do I get it?
If you need help with your online application, you can visit a Point Numérique, where a member of staff will help you with the process. Find the one nearest you.
The transfer code is obtained by completing the "Sell or donate your vehicle " process.
The code appears at the end of the process, on the "To Finish" screen.
The transfer code is only visible at the end of the procedure, so please take note of it.
What if I don't have the transfer code?
You can register a vehicle in your own name even without the transfer code, provided that the seller has completed the vehicle transfer procedure.
When you request a change of registrant, if you do not have the transfer code, you will be asked to provide the following information:
- Certificate number on the registration document
- Date of the registration document
When selling a second-hand vehicle, current regulations (article R. 322-4 of the French Highway Code) require the seller to provide the buyer with a lien release (CSA) dated less than 15 days before the sale, as one of the documents to be provided.
To obtain this document, the vehicle must be in the system at the time of sale, i.e. registered in the digital vehicle app.
It is not possible to register the vehicle in the name of the new owner if the vehicle is not in the system.
The seller must register their vehicle in the app before selling it.
To register your vehicle for the first time, you must:
- Authenticate your user account with FranceConnect. This account keeps you informed of the progress of your request, and allows you to communicate with the department in charge of it, which may ask you for additional information or supporting documents if necessary
- Select your service in “Make another request” from your “Vehicle space”
- Transmit the supporting documents that fit your situation in digital format. For fastest processing, check that your supporting documents are legible and of the correct size (max. 1MB per document)
- Tick the confirmation boxes to finalise the application once it has been checked by the Ministry of the Interior.
The vehicle will then receive a new SIV number. The seller pays the fixed feee and the transmission fee, i.e. €11.76.
If you have purchased a vehicle that is not in the system, you will not be able to register the vehicle in your name directly.
As the transfer of the vehicle cannot be registered if the vehicle is not in the system, the seller remains liable for any offences committed with the vehicle.
Yes, this is a change of registrant that must be carried out within one month.
A new registration certificate will be issued and the vehicle will be assigned a new SIV number in the format ZZ-123-ZZ.
You must declare the transfer online, even if donating, using the "Sell or donate your vehicle" process, and give the transfer code you obtain as a result to the new registrant of the vehicle.
To make this declaration online, you must:
- Create your ANTS account or log in with FranceConnect.
- Select the "Sell or donate your vehicle" option.
- Transmit the supporting documents that fit your situation in digital format. For fastest processing, check that your supporting documents are legible and of the correct size (max. 1MB per document)
- Give the transfer code to the new registrant of the vehicle.
The main registrant named on a vehicle registration certificate (formerly known as a carte grise) must have a driving licence corresponding to the category of vehicle purchased (article L. 322-1-1 of the French Highway Code).
This obligation applies to all individuals who own new or used vehicles (cars, two-wheelers, etc.) requiring a registration certificate.
It is still possible to own a vehicle without holding a proper driving licence.
In this case, the registration certificate must be issued in the name of a person holding the required driving licence, designated by the owner or, if the owner is a minor, by his or her legal representative. The registration certificate is then registered in the designated person's name per Articles L. 121-2 and L. 121-3 of the French Highway Code.
The owner must also be named on the registration certificate as a co-registrant.
Example
"I, the undersigned, Mr or Mrs ..., owner of the vehicle (make, vehicle identification number), hereby designate Mr or Mrs ... as the registrant on the registration certificate pertaining to this vehicle."
This designation may be signed, where appropriate, by two co-owners wishing to designate a main registrant of the vehicle registration certificate (CIV or CI).
The fact that a vehicle is pledged does not prevent it from being sold.
However, the seller must inform the purchaser of the presence of a pledge on the vehicle and provide that person with a detailed lien release (CSA) dated less than 15 days old showing the pledge.
In this case, it is not necessary to ask the purchaser for a document acknowledging the pledge in order to register the vehicle.
To sell your vehicle, your roadworthiness test must be less than 6 months old on the day you sell it, even if you have had a second inspection.
A roadworthiness test is not required if:
- your vehicle is less than 4 years old
- your vehicle is more than 4 years old and you sell it to a dealer or garage.
