Co-registrants
A request to update the vehicle registration document must be made when the main registrant wishes to add or remove a co-registrant.
To ask the the Ministry of the Interior to add or remove a co-registrant, you must:
- Log in with the FranceConnect system (What is FranceConnect?)
From your account, you can track the progress of your request, and allows you to communicate with the department in charge of it, which may ask you for additional information or supporting documents if necessary.
2. Click on the blue “New Request” button
3. Select "Registration" > "Make another request" > "Start the request"
4. Select the section "Reporting a change in your personal status"
5. Transmit the supporting documents that fit your situation in digital format. For fastest processing, check that your supporting documents are legible and of the correct size (max. 1MB per document)
6. Tick the legal conditions of use
7. Once your file has been processed, you need to resume the service, which is set to "Resume" status, by clicking on "OK" to pay any fees by credit/debit card, to finalise the process once the application has been checked by the Ministry of the Interior.
Send the following documents in digital format:
- Proof of address less than six months old
- An application for a vehicle registration certificate (cerfa no.13750)
- Vehicle registration certificates
- Proof of a valid roadworthiness test
- If you are doing this for someone else, send the signed mandate and proof of that person's identity in digital format with your request
- Proof of change of ownership of the vehicle (e.g. divorce decree, deed of separation of property or division agreement expressly specifying the person to whom the vehicle is being awarded).
For a married woman who is a co-registrant, the family name (or birth name) of the co-registrant is the one that will appear.
Since 21 March 2011, the first name of the co-registrant has also been printed on the registration certificate.

This involves a change in registrant.
The person who is getting the vehicle in their own name must pay the registration fees, just like when a vehicle is transferred to a third party.
Yes. It is possible to register a vehicle in the name of multiple individuals and/or legal entities, whether or not they share the same address.
One of them is designated as the main registrant of the registration certificate, and the others as co-registrants.
The details of each of the co-registrants are recorded in the SIV, but not all of them appear on the registration certificate. The certificate shows the last and first names of the main registrant and the first co-registrant, as well as the main registrant's address.
The registration certificate shows:
- The last/first/middle names and address of the main registrant, in section C.1
- The last/first/middle name (since 21 March 2011) of the first co-registrant next to section C.4.1, which specifies the number of registrants on the registration certificate (in the case of co-ownership).
- In the case of a married woman, the last name that must appear on the certificate in the co-registrant field is the birth name (i.e. base name) and not the customary name (i.e. married name).
Note: The registration certificate is not, however, a title deed.
The main registrant named on a vehicle registration certificate (carte grise) must have a driving licence corresponding to the category of vehicle purchased (article L. 322-1-1 of the French Highway Code).
This obligation applies to all individuals who own new or used vehicles (cars, two-wheelers, etc.) requiring a registration certificate.
It is still possible to own a vehicle without holding a proper driving licence.
In this case, the registration certificate must be issued in the name of a person holding the required driving licence, designated by the owner or, if the owner is a minor, by his or her legal representative. The registration certificate is then registered in the designated person's name per Articles L. 121-2 and L. 121-3 of the French Highway Code.
The owner must also be named on the registration certificate as a co-registrant.
The designation of another person as main registrant must take the form of a written document signed by the owner. For example:
"I, the undersigned, Mr or Mrs ...., owner of the vehicle (make, vehicle identification number), hereby designate Mr or Mrs ... as the registrant on the registration certificate pertaining to this vehicle."
This designation may be signed, where appropriate, by two co-registrants wishing to designate a main registrant of the vehicle registration certificate (CIV or CI).
